The Bergse Plas originated in the 17th and 18th centuries as a result of peat extraction. In the 20th century this area was discovered as an attractive residential and recreational area. The Straatweg is the connection to Rotterdam and also separates the Voorplas from the Achterplas. The street is also known as "Quote Road" due to the many grand villas accompanied by impressive gardens that border the Bergse Plassen. Sailing and rowing were once common on the lakes, but now most locals enjoy cruising around with luxurious boats.
Once on the lake the Prinsenmolen (Prince's Mill) will immediately stand out. This mill was built in 1648 and is a ground-sailer type. It is still operational for grinding and is inhabited by a miller who operates the mill once a month. Because the mill is still fully functioning, it can still be used in case of emergency to pump water from the Bergse Plas to the Rotte. The last time this happened was on October 25 and 26, 2002. The mill can be visited every year on National Mill Day (the second Saturday of May).
Sail on and you will come across watersports club Aegir and surrounding scouting clubs. During the weekends they organize sailing competitions and training sessions, and on Saturday traditional dutch boats called " vletten" also set sail from the nearby scouting clubs.
Via the tunnel onder the Straatweg, which is an extension of the Prins Bernardkade, you can reach the Bergse Achterplas. You will pass Sushi & Grill restaurant Kyoto first, where you can pick up fresh sushi from 3:30 pm onwards if you are willing to grab a bite. Furthermore, the Bergse Achterplas has of numerous small islands with recreational homes. This area is one of Rotterdam's best kept secrets and one of the gems of Rotterdam North. Decrease your speed and sail more cautiously through the islands here, as there are many unclear bends and intersections. In the summer, countless small boats swarm between the islands with people sailing to or from their cottages.
